Buddhism suggests the theory of “anatta” or no-self. What does it mean to say that we have no self? Perhaps it means, simply, that all we have are open states – each of which opens and closes all the time, depending on the context – and none of which is totally in charge. From the anatta perspective, there is no “one state to rule them all” that opens and closes all other states. For instance, if you have a state that knows about states (for instance, the state that is reading this essay) and it appears to orchestrate the opening and closing of all other states, then that is an illusion. That state itself can open and close – and, in an integrated bodymind, it too would open when needed and close when needed.
